An extension of the Dubai Metro Green Line will see 11 stations added to the route, which means the line will one day run from the Al Jaddaf Station to Academic City.

The RTA has confirmed there will be 20.6 kilometres of rail line added, and that the extension will serve areas like the Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, International City and Silicon Oasis. Work on the extension will begin next year.

The current Green Line has 18 stations (12 elevated and six underground), and on average both the Red and Green Lines transport 500,000 passengers a day.

Are you lacking a station on your commute route? Well if your problem may one day be solved, as there will be more stations built in the future – the targeted completion date of the entire metro system is 2030.

RED LINE EXTENSION

Meanwhile, the work on the Red Line extension is beginning soon, and it will be complete by 2020. In total 3.5 kilometres are being added from Rashidiya to Mirdiff, and 15 kilometres are being added from Jebel Ali to the Expo 2020 site (which is near Al Maktoum International Airport). The extension will add 12 stations to the Red Line, which currently has 29 stations.

Abullah Yousuf Al Ali, Acting CEO of RTA’s Rail Agency, spoke about how important the Metro is to the UAE and its future: “Dubai Metro brought a revolution in the public transport sector not only in Dubai but across the GCC,” he said at a conference.

“In Dubai it has played an important role in changing the public perspective about public transport, which is reflected in the increase in the share of public transport from just 6 per cent in 2006 to 13 per cent in 2013.”
