With 60,000 seats, air conditioning and a design that means it’s raised off of the ground, this is big news for sports fans in Dubai…

Plans for a 60,000 capacity Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid football stadium have been revealed.

The Dhs3 billion stadium will be fully air-conditioned, with facilities including exercise pitches, a sports training hall as well as a 5,000 capacity car park, a sports museum, a multi-purpose hall and conference and exhibition auditoriums.

Located in Al Aweer (yes, near all those secondhand car shops), the stadium’s design is in the shape of a half-ball. Phenomenally, it’s also slightly raised off the ground, and was approved this weekend by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai at an unveiling in Meydan.

When it will be completed hasn’t yet been announced.

The stadium will have enough seats for 60,000 people, 23,116 of which are in the upper tier, 6,688 in the lower tier, 8,941 VIP seats and 1,642 seats in the VIP suites.

The stadium’s standards and specifications are fully compliant with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), meaning we’ll hopefully be able to see some good football match-ups in the future.

The most expensive stadium currently built is the Dhs5.88 billion Met Life stadium in New Jersey in the USA.

The stadium’s reveal last Wednesday came as part of a nine-point plan that aims to revolutionise sport in Dubai.

The other parts of the plan included:

– The Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Award for excellence in school sports.

– The cessation of government funding for all football companies from 2021. They will receive government assistance to turn themselves around and augment their income as independent profit organisations.

– The Sheikh Hamdan Initiative for Community Sport.
