Dubai Opera’s not just about tenors and sopranos: in fact it’s just been announced that Brit-award winning singer-songwriter James Morrison will take to the majestic stage on Friday October 7.

The tickets will go on sale after the Eid Al Adha holiday but fans can sign up to be on the waiting list from today at the Dubai Opera website.

The husky-voiced 32-year-old now has four successful studio albums under his belt, and sings many songs that you’ll recognise. Fast fact: He trained to be a carpet fitter before he managed to break through in the music biz.

Sadly, from 2010 to 2015 Morrison withdrew from the music industry due to personal tragedy. The deaths of his father, brother and nephew within the space of three years that made it difficult for him to write music that he loved.

But happily he’s back and his latest album Higher Than Here entered the top 10 in the charts, this beautiful song from it is a great showcase of Morrison’s deep, raspy and soulful voice:

3 Morrison songs you’ll definitely know the words to

There’s this one about the time his guitar strings broke…

There’s the song he reportedly wrote for his now-wife…

And then this one that you’ll definitely be able to sing along to…

Morrison’s tunes not your bag but still keen to check out Dubai Opera? Well, here’s a list of the dozen or so other things you can see in the new venue, from Anoushka Shankar to Hussain Al Jassmi.
