We all know Dubai’s roads are home to plenty of prangs, but what’s behind them? The answers may surprise you…

“Dubai drivers suck.”

Yeah, we’ve heard it before – perhaps even said it ourselves as another car cuts us on on Sheikh Zayed road. But have you ever seen the stats on Dubai’s road accidents?

Some of the top causes of crashes might not be what you expected.

A recently released survey conducted by MoveSouq and Qatar Insurance sheds some light on Dubai’s driving situation over 2015.

But first, the answer to the eternal question…

WHICH GENDER CAUSES THE MOST ACCIDENTS?

“Heh, woman drivers suck,” said the ignorant male.

Well, sorry dude – the survey says otherwise.

Dubai’s women were only responsible for 10 per cent of car accidents in Dubai in 2015.

Granted, the UAE’s population consists of 70 per cent men, and there are more male drivers on the road than women, but still. Women are a lot more cautious behind the wheel, the stats suggest.

WHAT ARE THE TOP CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS?

The biggest one? Tied for first place is the sudden changing of lanes and drink-driving, causing 20 per cent of all accidents each

Other causes cited were:

– Not leaving enough distance – 19 per cent
– Lack of judgement – 10 per cent
– Not keeping in your lane – 6 per cent
– Entering a street before making sure it’s clear – 6 per cent
– Jumping a red light – 5 per cent
– Carelessness and lack of attention – 4 per cent
– Reversing dangerously – 3 per cent
– Speeding – 2 per cent

WHICH AGE GROUP HARBOURS THE WORST DRIVERS?

We feel this is fairly well known, but yes, it’s the younger, more inexperienced drivers.

Motorists aged between 21 to 29 are responsible for 37 per cent of accidents in Dubai.

The 30 to 39 category are responsible for 34 per cent while the40 to 49 age group are behind for 14 per cent.

Showing wisdom really does come with age are those 50 and above, who are responsible for just 9 per cent of accidents.

WHICH TYPE OF VEHICLE GETS IN THE MOST ACCIDENTS?

As bad as you think some minibus or truck drivers are, the No 1 spot goes to private cars, which end up in 64 per cent of accidents.

Trucks take second place with 11 per cent, motorbikes in third with 8 per cent, while taxis and minibuses are each involved in 5 per cent of crashes.

WHAT TIME OF DAY DO MOST ACCIDENTS OCCUR?

Surprisingly, most accidents don’t take place during rush hour. They take place during night time.

According to the survey, 55 per cent of Dubai’s road accidents once the sun’s gone down. Is it because some drivers forget their lights, or are sleepier then? The jury’s out – but it’s definitely worth paying extra care and attention post-dusk.

It also seems that most accidents on Dubai’s roads take place on a Thursday – so be on the alert today….
