Dubai drivers aren’t necessarily the most law-abiding bunch, so a new bundle of rules regarding the safety standards of the Dubai Tram have been introduced by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,Crown Prince of Dubai.
The crackdown is aimed at cutting down on common traffic violations, and red light jumpers are under the spotlight.
SO, WHAT ARE THE NEW RULES?
Jumping a red light at a tramway intersection and causing a traffic accident with fatalities can now incur a minimum fine of Dhs15,000, and a maximum of Dhs30,000.
The driver’s license will also be suspended for up to three years.
Doing the same and causing a traffic accident with casualties will result in a fine of Dhs5,000 to Dhs15,000. Drivers will also face a license suspension for a period ranging from six months to a year.
Jumping the red light at a tramway intersection and causing a traffic accident without any casualties will result in a fine of Dhs3,000 to Dhs6,000, with a suspension of the driver’s license for a period ranging from 30 days to six months.
Jumping the red light at a tramway intersection without causing a traffic accident will carry a minimum fine of Dhs2,000 and a maximum fine of Dhs5,000, with a suspension of the driver’s license for a period ranging from 30 days to three months.
So basically you get caught running a red light, and you’re definitely ending up with a bill and some time off the road.
Contractors can also face fines between Dhs100,000 and Dhs500,000 if they are found to be in breach of safety and security requirements nearby.
You can also be fined for interfering with the 10.6-kilometre tram line, which starts from Al Sufouh and treks all the way up to JBR with more than 30 intersections along the way.
Throw anything on the track? That’ll be Dhs500 – the same if you do anything that stalls the tram’s operation or affects its safety.
The law changes were welcomed by Salah bu Farousha, the head of Dubai Traffic Prosecution, according to 7Days.
“Dubai Tram is a new transport system and many people travel on it,” he said, adding that motorists who cause a fatal accident could also be prosecuted and face jail time.
“Dubai government wants motorists to be more careful around the tram.”
