Well, this is cool…

A group of 13 UAE residents, both Emiratis and expats, have just begun a week-long adventure into the UAE desert on camels, and using only traditional forms of navigation.

The third edition of the Camel Trek organised by the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Centre set out from Nakhra in Dubai on Sunday.

The trek will finish at Global Village on January 28 (in case you want to cheer them home!).

“We are heading South East and will be using old navigation methods,” leader of the Camel Trek Khalifa bin Sabeen told Wam.

“We have to follow the tracks. There are certain areas for resting and we have to camp before the sun sets so we can set up the tents. We will work as a team with some people taking care of the camels and saddles, some will do tents and some others will cook the food.”

They’re not going solo though – the group will be followed by support teams in cars to provide assistance in case of an emergency.

The group will cover a distance of 40 to 50 kilometres per day.

The 13-member team is made up of four women and nine men from Oman, USA, Egypt, France, UK and the UAE.

Two of the women from the team are British athletes Rhian Adams and Hina Webb, who climbed both Kilimanjaro and to Everest base camp last year.

Rhian has been posting regular updates of the Camel Trek on her Instagram page, showing the practice before the challenge as well as life in the desert on camel back.

Good luck team!
