There’s Wi-Fi, and then there’s WOW-Fi…

If you’ve ever Skyped your mum at an airport to let her know you’re on your way, you’ll know how frustratingly slow and patchy the Wi-Fi can be.

The good news is, Dubai Airports now claims to have the world’s fastest free airport Wi-Fi.

Dubbed “WOW-Fi”, the service is said to provide a high-speed connection of up to 100 Mbps — supposedly faster than any other airport.

The move follows the rolling out of unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi across Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central Airport in December.

Dubai Airports executive vice president of technology and infrastructure Michael Ibbitson said their goal was to offer something travellers had never experienced at an airport before.

“With WOW-Fi, passengers will get a speed of up to 100 Mbps to enable them to quickly download or upload emails, pictures, videos and social media updates and then get on with enjoying the airport or connecting to their friends and family across the world,” he said.

“We are certain the WOW-Fi experience will impress the 89 million passengers we expect to welcome at DXB in 2017.”

WORLD’S FASTEST AIRPORT Wi-Fi? REALLY?

In November, tech blog Rotten Wi-Fi published its annual ratings of the best airport Wi-Fi, after testing the speed and user satisfaction in 226 airports worldwide.

Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, came out on top, with users reporting an average download speed of 42.17 Mbps, and an average upload speed of 38.9 Mbps.

However, the airport said its free Wi-Fi was even stronger than the ranking indicated, with upload and download speeds of 130 Mbps.

So it remains to be seen whether DXB will actually take the airport Wi-Fi crown…
