As Mary Poppins would say: “Feed the birds…”

Like something out of a Disney movie, a number of beautiful bird boxes have appeared in trees and on building ledges all over the city.

The sweet initiative, called Tyour Al Khair, was launched by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and ties in perfectly with the Year of Giving.

The authority’s aim is to “promote environmental sustainability in Dubai and to foster a culture of good in the UAE community” – which includes looking after our feathered friends.

Whoever posts the best photo of the bird boxes, using the hashtag #Tyour_Al_khair_DEWA, will win a prize, DEWA says.

“Tyour Al Khair is one of the pioneering initiatives, whereby DEWA aims to engender the Islamic values of compassion for birds and animals, and other aspects of charity,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.

“We learned from our Prophet (peace be upon him) that there is a reward in serving every creature in need.”

Remember, in the words of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai: “Every one of us can do good in our own environs. We can all make a real difference right where we are. The place where we live can always do with some charity work. We can clean the beaches or the deserts. We can take care of the trees. We can be kind to our fellow citizens.”

Or we can simply feed the birds in our own backyard…
