It wasn’t even close…

No doubt about it, Dubai is a fantastic place to visit for tourists. From the world’s tallest building to a bevy of choices when it comes to dining, shopping and culture, there are certainly no shortage of ways to entertain oneself, and even more ways to spend money doing them.

And it seems like visitors to the city have indeed been spending. According to the annual Mastercard Destination Cities Index, Dubai has ranked as the number one city where tourists like to spend their money, splurging a cool $28.5 billion (approx. Dhs105 billion) in 2016.

That puts it ahead of both New York and London, where last year tourists spent $17.02 billion and $16.09 billion respectively, so it wasn’t even close!

What’s even more impressive is that Dubai managed this with significantly less tourists than other cities in the top five, although a reported 14.87 million people visiting our city certainly isn’t anything to scoff at.

Rounding out the top five were Singapore with $15.69 billion spent, and Bangkok with $14.08 billion, which coincidentally saw the highest number of tourists last year out of all the cities in the study.
