The electric wheels on the bus go round and round…

Dubai’s school kids could soon be riding to their morning classes on a bus from the future as Emirates Transport has announced that it has entered the final testing phase of the region’s first all-electric, zero-emissions school bus.

Manufactured in conjunction with a Chinese transportation company, the 45-seater vehicle complies with the UAE’s stringent school bus safety regulations and, during its pilot phase, will operate on routes that mimic a typical school bus’ daily journey.

Two electric charging stations have been installed specifically designed to accommodate the new bus which can travel distances of up to 100km on a single charge even under Dubai’s more extreme weather conditions.

While the bus is indeed all-electric, it’s important to note that it is not fully-autonomous. That means there will still be a bus driver behind the wheel taking your kids to school. We haven’t quite got to the stage where the city’s roads will be completely populated by self-driving vehicles just yet, but trust us, Dubai’s working on it…
