The cost of registering a brand new car has gone down, while the price of registering a secondhand vehicle has nearly doubled…

Effective 1 December 2017, a number of the fees associated with vehicle licensing and registration have been updated.

These new changes were originally announced back in October by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, with the RTA saying that revenue raised via some of the extra costs will be funneled back into helping fund road safety initiatives around the city.

What are the changes and how do they affect me?

First up, the cost of registering and licensing a new vehicle in Dubai has been reduced to Dhs400 (rather than the previous fee of Dhs460) making it cheaper for anyone looking to purchase a brand new ride. Hooray!

However, if you’re looking at getting secondhand vehicle, you will need to eat a new charge of Dhs350 for a change in ownership (that’s either buying secondhand from a private seller or a car dealership). This amount is on top of the Dhs400 you need to pay for the vehicle licensing, bumping up the cost for buying a used car to Dhs750.

The price for registration renewals has also increased from Dhs300 to Dhs350. Plus, there is now an inspection charge of Dhs170 assigned to any vehicle over three years of age.

Those looking to transfer their license from another country over to the UAE will now need to pay Dhs600, which is up from the previous fee of Dhs400.
