The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced it is set to open an extension of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street (previously Academic City Road) this week. Linking Dubai’s Al Ain Road and Al Yalayes Road, the 25km stretch will open on Wednesday March 21.

The cost of the build has come in at a cool Dhs474 million, but is expected to ease traffic jams in the city.

The new eight-lane street is located in the eastern part of Dubai, between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the west and Emirates Road to the east. It runs four lanes in each direction, passing Silicon Oasis and Arabian Ranches up to Al Yalayes Road.

The plan included the construction of several intersections with the surrounding road network. A flyover has been built at the intersection of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan St with Latifa bint Hamdan St near the entrance of the International Village for motorists coming from Emirates Road. There’s also a new signalised junction at the intersection with Al Qudra Road, and a surface signalised junction at the intersection of Hessa St.

There’s still one part of the road to be completed, with the last sector of the street from the intersection of Al Yalayes Road up to Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road and the entrance of Expo 2020 area still under construction.
