The move is designed to monitor the conduct of cab drivers

If you’ve caught a cab recently in Dubai you may have noticed a sticker informing you that the vehicle was being monitored by a surveillance camera. Currently, 6,500 taxis in the emirate have been fitted with close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in order to monitor the conduct of their drivers. And that number is about to grow.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced today that it plans to roll-out cameras to its entire fleet – comprising 10,221 cabs – by the end of 2018.

Adel Shakri, Director of Transportations Systems, at RTA’s Public Transport Agency said “The System aims to ensure the compliance of taxi drivers with the rules & principles of professional and moral conducts. It even motivates them to observe optimal attitudes towards users of the taxi service.”

The cameras could also be useful in the event that an item is lost or forgotten by a passenger as “The footage of these cameras can be retrieved in case of any violations reported during the taxi trips to eliminate any complaints from service beneficiaries,” added Shakri.
