These are the rules for eating at the cinema during Ramadan

By

Roxy, Reel, Vox or Novo, find out each of the cinema’s policies on eating during Ramadan…

For the duration of Ramadan it is forbidden to eat and drink in public during daylight hours. This is done as a sign of respect towards those who are observing the holy month by fasting.

One grey area that residents are often confused over when it comes to do’s and don’ts of Ramadan, is whether it’s acceptable to eat at the cinema – and if so, when.

As a general rule, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is strictly prohibited, however, the rules for the various cinemas across city do alter a bit during the holy month, so it’s important to be aware of the changes.

Here’s what each of the major cinema players has advised on their policies:

Roxy Cinemas – The Beach JBR, City Walk

Roxy Cinemas communications team confirmed to us that food and beverage would continue to be served at both their locations on The Beach, JBR and City Walk as normal.

Reel Cinemas – Dubai Mall, Jebel Ali Recreation Club

Reel Cinemas has a new policy this year. The Dubai Mall Reel Cinema will be open for takeaway only.

At the dine-in cinema at Jebel Ali, normal dine-in menus will be available throughout Ramadan. Timings differ daily, and the cinema will open at the later time of 2pm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with an earlier showing at midday on Thursday, and 11am on the weekend days.

VOX Cinemas – Mall of the Emirates, Mercato Mall, Deira City Centre etc

According to Khaleej Times, Vox Cinemas have revealed that food purchased at their counters will be wrapped in plastic bags and can be opened and consumed only inside the movie halls.

Consuming food anywhere on the premises of Vox Cinemas, apart from inside the movie hall, is strictly prohibited.

Novo Cinemas – Ibn Batutta Mall, Dragon Mart, Dubai Festival City

This year, Novo Cinemas confirmed they have got permission to serve food and drink at all three Dubai cinemas (that’s Megaplex Ibn Battuta, Dragon and Dubai Festival City).

Food and drink will be served to non-muslims, children under 10 years and pregnant women.

In the case of Megaplex Ibn Battuta – only the inside counter will be operational. All food will be put into bags to eat inside the cinema.
