Social media was positively buzzing with stunning photos of the rare celestial event…

The longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century took place over the weekend, and Dubai was among one of the top spots in the world to watch it.

This prompted scores of UAE residents to head out out their homes and brave the Friday night heat to snap some pretty impressive shots.

Aside form the eclipse itself (which lasted one hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds) the moon also underwent a phenomenon known as a ‘blood moon’. This is when the moon changes from its traditional white hue to a deep, almost blood-like red due to the sun’s rays being reflected through the planet’s atmosphere.

The two celestial events taking place simultaneously resulted in some absolutely stunning photos posted to social media. We’ve picked out some of our favourites below, in case you missed it:
