Upgrades will include touch-ups to the more than 800 shops and systems to ensure the quality of the goods on sale there…

Dubai’s Gold Souk is famous for having a huge concentration of gold, silver and jewellery all in one place, however despite all that wealth it has begun to look a little run down in recent years.

To that end, the Architectural Heritage Department has announced that the popular tourist destination will be receiving a major facelift, reports The National.

The department plans to develop the souk, located in Deira, in innovative ways that bring it up to snuff with other developments in the city, while still maintaining the charm and character that makes the area so unique.

Top of the bill in terms of upgrades are a reexamining of health and safety procedures, plus a system of random sampling and electronic scales calibration to ensure that the quality of the goods on sale comply with stringent guidelines set by the government.

Other planned improvements include touch-ups to the facades of the more than 800 shops located there, as well as upgrades to ventilation, lighting and the addition of smart signage.
