It will include a hypermarket, a hospital, cinemas and shopping facilities…

Blue-collar workers in the UAE will soon have somewhere new to enjoy themselves on their weekends and public holidays as it has been announced that massive new commercial centre is being planned especially for them.

Announced by the Sharjah Labour Standards Department Authority (LSDA), the two new projects – a commercial centre and a park – will be located in Sharjah’s Al Sajaa Industrial Area.

Spread across 177,000 sq ft, the commercial centre will house a number of key facilities including a hypermarket, a hospital, 88 retail stores, and well as offices and private parking areas. It will also include three cinema halls with capacity for over 1,000 people.

A park is also planned for the same area which will provide a range of public services such as green areas, barbecue spaces, an open theatre, and areas for sports such as cricket, basketball and volleyball.

In an official statement from WAM, Sheikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, director general of the Sharjah LSDA, said “This aims at improving the level of workers culturally and intellectually in addition to keeping them healthy”.

Over 85 per cent of the UAE’s resident population is made up of foreign workers, with a significant number of them employed in blue-collar jobs. Many of them commute daily between Sharjah, where they live, and the other emirates which makes the announcement of this new centre good news as it will give them somewhere a little closer to home to visit on their downtime.
