Art and culture fans in Dubai will once again flock to Media One Hotel this week as a new pop-up gallery launches throughout the ground floor of the Media City building.

British artists and self-confessed eccentric Mel Pickup will unveil her latest collection,  ‘Mel Pickup presents Retro Culture’, on Tuesday April 9, with it running throughout the month.

The eye-catching works have more than a hint of Hollywood’s glamorous past, with a particular nod to the superhero genre. Each is awash with comic-book colouring and is rich in 80s nostalgia in style and subject.

In total, 25 brand new pieces will be exhibited, showing Mel’s significant talents in the use of acrylic, ink, aerosol and collage.

Speaking ahead of a launch party on Tuesday April 8 (6.30pm to 8.30pm), Media One’s general manager, Mark Lee, said: “Media One Hotel regularly opens its doors to renowned local artists in a bid to make art more accessible. We have been inspired by Mel’s art, which has been used at many of our events in the recent months; and think that she really makes a unique expression that breaks boundaries in a quirky and humorous way.”

Everything on show is also on sale, with 20 per cent of the value of the sales going to ‘Senses’, a non-profit organisation and residential care centre for children with multiple disabilities.
