Big really is beautiful in the UAE. Not only will Abu Dhabi be home to one of the biggest shopping destinations in the country when Yas Mall opens this November, it’s now been announced it will be home to the region’s biggest department store as well.

Aldar, the company behind the development, claims the 200,000 square foot store will be home to more than 200 global brands. Unfortunately, the little teases won’t tell us which department store it will be, or the brands that will be featured.

So who will it be? There’s been rumours it could be House Of Fraser, from the UK, but there’s already a branch in the World Trade Centre Mall and another branch is already confirmed for Yas. Another UK department store, John Lewis, was threatening to open a branch in the UAE back in 2011, but scrapped plans. Or it could be US store Macy’s (the owners of Bloomingdales, which already has a branch in Dubai).

But perhaps the most likely is it will be a completely new company formed here in the UAE.

“We believe that by creating a new concept, with one of the region’s most respected luxury retailers, we will create a unique shopping experience that complements the diverse retail mix already in place at the mall,” said Aldar CEO, Mohammed Al Mubarak

There’s been a few whispers about the project and whether or not it will open as scheduled in November, but Aldar also claimed this week that 95 per cent of the mall’s 400 retail units have already been filled.

Once completed, the mall will also feature a Geant (the largest hypermarket in Abu Dhabi), a 20-screen VOX cinema, and will offer direct access to Yas’s themepark Ferrari World.
