Dubai from the sky
We love UAE

Walking along the main road is easy. But what about turning down that back street, or that tucked away little alley? What lies down there? Well, in Dubai, all sorts of wonderful things actually. We’ve scoured the city – and our little black books – to find dozens of hidden gems in Dubai. If you want to find somewhere new to eat, somewhere new to play, or somewhere new to get some art and culture, scan our list. You’ll be surprised at what you can find just off the beaten track.

Someone who is most definitely a gem, but certainly not hidden, is Lady Gaga. We stepped bravely into the mind of the eccentric singer to find out what she thinks about her fans, fame and fashion ahead of her Dubai concert in September.

Another act coming to Dubai that is sure to stun audiences is The Illusionists. Seven guys, all unique, are bringing their boxes of tricks to Dubai World Trade Centre for a second year and we spoke to them about their show. Sorry, but they wouldn’t tell us how their tricks are done – you’ll have to go and see them and work it out for yourself.

Whereas The Illusionists are bringing knives, fire and doves to Dubai, the Disney On Ice gang are just bringing their ice skates. We met the cast of the hit children’s show who’ll be enacting scenes from Tangled, Brave, and Beauty And The Beast on a specially built ice rink. Also in What’s On this month we give you the guide to the best cafes in Dubai, and how to live an environmentally sound life in the city.

In restaurant news, we have the verdict on the new fine dining spot from star chef Heinz Beck, as well as some casual eateries in the form of a fish shack, a British café, and the coolest art space slash restaurant to open for a long time. The approach of autumn means brunching season is upon us and we have the lowdown on all the new Friday feasts.

Elsewhere, there’s where to play weird sports in Dubai, quickie beauty fixes, spa treatments that use food (caviar facial, anyone?), why aloe vera is amazing, juice bars and the new nutrition trend: raw food. Throw in some hot news on art gallery openings and theatre that’s coming to town and you’ve got the perfect package to kick start your autumn. Get out there and explore – and don’t ignore those little side streets.
