After the success of the Desert Warrior Challenge and Zombie Run last month it seems as if extreme racing events are more popular than ever.

The next military-style obstacle course to hit the UAE is the Reebok Spartan Race presented by X Dubai, a 5km timed-race that challenges participants to conquer over 20 obstacles over thick dunes of mud and sand, in an as yet undisclosed Dubai desert location.

Spartan Race is one of the world’s most popular obstacle race series that challenges entrants to “discover their inner warrior”. Well over 500,000 individuals have taken part in Spartan races to date. In 2014, over 60 races were held around the world and now the mega-brand has finally hit our shores.

While the obstacles in Dubai are still under wraps, What’s On can exclusively reveal that mud pools, rope climbs, barbed wire trenches and a ‘slippery wall’ will all be included somewhere along the race. To make the obstacle course even more challenging, Spartans who don’t complete an obstacle will be directed to a ‘burpee station’ – located next to each obstacle – where they must endure 30 burpees before being allowed to continue… the Colour Run this is not.

Aside from the race itself, there will also be a large festival area that’s set to resemble a carnival, with family-friendly fairground games as well as a mud pit tug-of-war and arm-wrestling competitions. The Spartan Race organisers also hope to stage the world’s largest water balloon fight on the day of the event.

If you want to join the masses that have climbed mud mountains and jumped over flaming coals in the name of the Spartan Race, there’s still time to register for the February 20 race in Dubai. Best of luck, you brave gladiator you.
