Hot on the heels of the success of Desert Warrior Challenge, as well as the upcoming Spartan Race, a new obstacle run in Dubai has been announced.

The Sand Pit Run leans heavily on the teamwork element that has made the events so popular in the UAE over the course of the last year.

A 10km course – twice that of the Spartan Race – will be punctuated by 15 obstacles that require anything from balance, strength, co-ordination and nerves of steel. The event website has a handy illustrated guide detailing exactly what is expected of participants, with Team What’s On, who will be on the start line, particularly wary of ‘Barby’ and the ‘Plumber’s Mile’. There’s also ‘Alcatraz’, ‘Arachnophobia’ and ‘The Mountain’.

Registration for the first of two events this year is already open. Taking place at Al Barari on April 17, entry costs Dhs310. For more information visit thesandpitrun.com.

The Sand Pit Run comes a week before the Desert Warrior Challenge, which bills itself as the most extreme military-style endurance obstacle course in the UAE, returns following its October debut.

Meanwhile, later this week, on February 20, the first ever Spartan Race takes place at Jebel Ali Racecourse in Al Barsha. The 5km military-style timed event challenges participants to conquer more than 20 obstacles; mud pools, a rope climb, a slippery wall, barbed-wire trenches, a spear throw, a fire jump and a tyre flip are just a handful of feats participants can expect. Spartans who don’t complete an obstacle will be directed to a burpee station where they must complete 30 burpees before being allowed to continue.

Away from obstacle based races, the UAE has fast become a hub for all sorts of endurance sports, with the likes of the Wadi Bih Run and M1 Tower Race already taken place in 2015.
