Is this breakfast spot worth a trip across the creek?

Let’s face it: for many of us, journeying to Dubai’s older districts can feel a million miles away, saved for the odd day trip with visiting family members who are keen to experience a slice of old Dubai. But the promise of an excellent breakfast across the creek sparked our curiosity.

Skye & Walker might sound familiar – the venue was originally called Skywalk, but the café closed six months ago and has undergone a head-to-toe overhaul.

The rebranded health-conscious café incorporates reclaimed wood with statement piece shelving and brass lamps dangling overhead, while every item on the menu is labelled covering the gamut of dietary requirements from vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free and Paleo.

Fortunately, this doesn’t mean you’re left picking through limp lentil salads. The ABB&J (Dhs40), for example, is banana, almond butter and jam all wrapped in protein bread and served with a shot of Nutella – it’s essentially a PB and J for the modern man, and completely delicious.

We were dubious when the waitress recommended the breakfast flatbread (Dhs50) but, topped with zaatar, arugula, roasted tomatoes, fried eggs and mozzarella, it tasted like a wonderfully crispy breakfast pizza.

No weekend breakfast is complete without avocado on toast and we were happy to find ours served with poached eggs and sundried tomatoes (Dhs50), packed with plenty of smashed avocado and spices. The cafe’s only downfall was a decent cup of joe.

Skye & Walker is open through the day, serving salads, soups and build-your-own pizzas, but breakfast is where it shines.
