Apple is replacing the batteries of 88,770 iPhone 6s devices in the UAE after they were found to be faulty, the UAE Ministry of Economy says.

The tech giant announced in November that some iPhone 6s owners were eligible for a free battery replacement after the devices started shutting down unexpectedly.

“This is not a safety issue and only affects devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 2015,” Apple said.

In a statement on Monday, the UAE Ministry of Economy said 88,770 phone batteries in the UAE would need to be replaced.

Hashim Al Nuaimi, the director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry, said: “The phones were replaced as part of regular campaigns that include testing products for reasons that may be unrelated to safety.”

Apple will let you know if your iPhone 6s is eligible for a battery replacement, free of charge. A word of warning though – Apple says it may restrict or limit repair to the original country of purchase (so hopefully you purchased your phone in the UAE).

You might feel as though you’ve been hearing a lot about smartphone battery woes in recent times. Last year, Samsung was forced to issue a global recall of its Galaxy Note 7 devices after a major battery flaw caused some of the phones to overheat and combust.
