When the punishment fits the crime…

Dubai’s ruler has ordered a group of men who carried out an act of animal cruelty towards a cat to clean Dubai Zoo for the next three months.

H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has instructed the offenders to clean the zoo’s facilities for four hours a day, every day, as a form of community service.

A video of the brutal incident was shared widely on social media.

Now, the Dubai Media Office has posted a photo of the three men to Twitter, which shows them sweeping the footpath of the zoo.

Last year, President Sheikh Khalifa issued a new federal law to deal with cases of animal cruelty.

Anyone in violation faces a one-year jail term and/or a fine up to Dhs200,000.

According to a report by The National, the men could be the first people prosecuted under the new law.

The incident represents the second punishment Sheikh Mohammed has ordered in recent weeks, after a video showing a group of men driving dangerously in City Walk went viral last month.

The ruler ordered the driver and the men in the car with him to clean Dubai streets for four hours every day for 30 days.

A photo shared by the Media Office at the time showed the unidentified men cleaning the very streets they were filmed driving recklessly on.
