The UAE is cracking down on cyber criminals…

You now face up to 25 years in jail and a fine of up to Dhs4 million for breaking the UAE’s cyber crime law.

President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan this week issued a federal decree to amend the law, which was introduced in 2012.

According to the updated law, anyone who establishes, manages or runs a website that promotes or assists terrorist groups will face between 10 and 25 years in jail, and a fine between Dhs2 million and Dhs4 million, state news agency WAM reports.

Those who run websites or publish information with the aim to incite hate will also face up to five years in jail, and a fine between Dhs500,000 and Dhs1 million. First-time offenders may alternatively be placed under electronic probation and monitoring, and prevented from using information technology.

The changes also include temporary imprisonment and a fine of up to Dhs1 million for anyone who transmits “information, news, or cartoon drawings or any other pictures” which may endanger national security.

Any expats found guilty will also be subject to deportation.

Other cyber crimes include using abusive language through a computer network, using social media to fundraise, and spreading rumours via social media.
