Fifty new trains are scheduled to arrive between this November and October 2019…

Regular metro user? Your line could be getting an upgrade in the next couple of months as Dubai’s new metro trains start to arrive. Fifty trains will be brought to Dubai in total, with the first arriving in November, and the last by October 2019.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Director General HE Mattar Al Tayer made the announcement from a visit to Alstom, the manufacturer’s factory in Poland.

Of the 50 trains, 35 will be used to enhance the current Dubai Metro service. The other 15 will service the new Expo 2020 route, called the Route 2020 Project. This involves extending the Dubai Metro Red Line 15 km from Nakheel Harbour & Tower Station to the site of Expo 2020.

So how will the new trains be different?

Well, they will all have a dedicated women and children carriage at the back, as well as part of the first carriage reserved for Gold Class. The inside has had a restructure too, with seats in the Silver Class carriages as well as women and childrens carriage all against the sides running long-ways down the carriage. This will increase the capacity of the trains by 8 per cent, from 643 riders to 696. The exteriors remain unchanged.

The new carriages are customised to be used by People of Determination too, to ensure the smooth boarding and alighting of riders.

New illuminated maps and digital displays will also be installed, to guide users around the metro route and stations, which will use an LED power-saving system.

We look forward to taking a spin later this year.
