Sponsored: Sick of your food going to waste? Bosch has some brilliant solutions…

We’re fortunate to have fresh produce from all over the world at our fingertips here in Dubai. But the biggest challenge is keeping it that way in our sweltering climate. Who has ever purchased a trolley-load of ripe fruit and veges, only to have it all turn soft and brown just a couple of days later?

You’re not alone – according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, approximately one-third of the world’s food is being wasted, which equates to around 1.6 billion tons of food annually.

The good news is, there’s a few simple things you can do to prevent your food from spoiling before you have a chance to enjoy it. The best place to start? Making sure you have the right refrigerator.

Home appliance brand Bosch has just opened a brand new flagship store in Umm Suqeim where you can shop their full range of appliances and models, all designed by German engineers. We spoke with Bosch to find out what makes their fridges perfect for the UAE.

VitaFresh cooling technology

It’s not the temperature that keeps fruit and veges fresh – it’s actually the humidity. Basically, fruits like low humidity, while veges like high humidity. That’s why it’s important to know what compartments you should be putting them in.

Bosch fridges have a special feature called VitaFresh, which keeps produce fresh for up to two times longer than a regular vegetable drawer. There are two compartments with different humidity settings – one for fruit, one for veges. Not only does this ensure your produce stays fresh, but it also protects all the nutrients and vitamins, so it’s good for your body as well as your wallet.

SuperCool and SuperFreeze functions

Another handy feature of Bosch fridges is the SuperCool and SuperFreeze functions, which lets you pre-set your fridge before you go to the supermarket.

When you load your fridge with new items, it lets in warm air which can spoil the food that is already in there. But if you activate the SuperCool mode (or SuperFreeze for your freezer) in advance, it will cause the temperature of the fridge to rapidly drop, so it will be able to handle the surge of warm air and keep everything fresh.

Holiday mode

Escaping the UAE over the summer months? Most people usually plan on throwing out whatever is in their fridge and unplugging it to save energy while they’re away. But you don’t need to do that with a Bosch fridge.

Bosch fridges have a ‘holiday mode’ that keeps the fridge running at a higher temperature to use less energy, and leaves the freezer on. So you’ll still be able to enjoy the food inside when you return.

Here are some more top tips from Bosch…

– Don’t chop your food until you are ready to consume it. Whole items stay fresh for longer.
– Know where your food should go. Most refrigerators have special compartments for each food type, eg. egg trays and meat compartments. This is something to keep in mind especially during times when you have a very full fridge, such as Ramadan or the festive season.
– Store your leftovers in airtight containers to maintain freshness. Also, make sure your cooked food has completely cooled down before you put it in the fridge.
