A new Police initiative launched in the Year of Tolerance means that drivers could have their fines wiped within a year…

Dubai Police have launched a new initiative for settling traffic fines in the UAE, where drivers can get up to a 100 per cent reduction on their existing traffic fines.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, the Commander-in-chief of Dubai Police explained that the new initiative is in response to the 2019 Year of Tolerance, and directives from HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who has stressed that “Tolerance increases strength and resilience, and helps establish a global, cohesive society.”

The initiative applies to all vehicles registered in Dubai, and will work on a sliding scale, offering discounts of 25 per cent to 100 per cent, provided that drivers do not commit any violations for a full calendar year starting from February 2019.

Here’s how the sliding scale works:

  • Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for three months can obtain a reduction of 25 per cent of their current fines
  • Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for six months can obtain a reduction of 50 per cent of their current fines
  • Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for nine months can obtain a reduction of 75 per cent of their current fines
  • Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for 12 months can obtain a reduction of 100 per cent of their current fines

The initiative applies only to privately owned vehicles, and won’t apply to cars which are registered with businesses, rental offices or companies, including public or private transport companies.

Individuals who live outside the state for more than three consecutive months from the date of the traffic violation cannot benefit from the initiative.

“The driver’s compliance with traffic laws and regulations will be computed on 6 February 2019 with a (25%) reduction for every three months. If a driver commits an offence before the end of the period, he/she cannot benefit from the initiative, and the grace period is recounted from the date of the new violation,” Maj-Gen Al Zafeen, Assistant Commander-in-chief for Operations at Dubai Police said at the announcement.
