K9 have re-homed 7,000 dogs over the last 30 years…

The stray dog problem in the UAE is bigger than most of us can even imagine, as many Dubai residents are unable to take their furry friend with them when they leave the UAE. The K9 Friends shelter is a leading dog rescue facility which holds 130 dogs at any one time, and has an ever-growing waitlist.

The centre is run solely by volunteers who give up their free time to carry out maintenance, care for the animals, and focus on re-homing the dogs to the right households.

The adoption process is a critical part of ensuring the dogs find their forever home. It begins with a chat where the dedicated staff will do their best to find our as much about your lifestyle and the type of dog you’re looking for, then you’ll come in for an interview. This gives the whole family a chance to meet a variety of dogs in a comfortable space and find their perfect match.

Animal-lovers who are unable to commit to adoption also have the option to foster a pup. This can provide vital feedback on the dog’s mannerisms and personality, which can help the shelter determine their perfect forever home. Even if you only have a few hours to spare, you can offer to walk a dog from 10am to 5pm, Saturday to Thursday and give a canine a great day out.

The great work done by volunteers at K9 Friends makes a huge difference to the stray dog community but the best way to help the problem is to avoid buying puppies from breeders. Think carefully before you make the decision to get a pet and remember – adopt, don’t shop.
