The Sharjah Classic Car Museum is the first car museum of its kind in the region…

Looking to do something a little different this weekend?

Located on the outskirts of Sharjah, the Sharjah Classic Car Museum has been around since 2008, and showcases more than 100 classic cars.

The museum is found about a 30-minutes away from Dubai, but it’s one you need to add on your list of things to do in UAE whether you’re a car enthusiast or not…

About the museum

The Sharjah Classic Car Museum first opened up to the public in 2008, under the patronage of HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. It underwent a remarkable renovation and re-opened to the public in 2013.

Attracting tourists and visitors all across the world, the museum is the first of its kind in the region and showcases more than 100 classic cars which have been manufactured in the early 20th century.

The museum has been divided into sections to give you an understanding of how cars evolved throughout time.

The first section you will come across is Early Autos (1915-1939). This section showcases cars which have been manufactured from 1915 to 1939. Keep your eyes peeled for the black 1915 Dodge model – the oldest car in the museum.

The Automobile Redefined (1940-1959) section display cars that marked the end of World War II. Here you can learn about American brands and about the first female race car drivers. There’s even a car here that was worth only 905 dollars back in the day, (that’s just about Dhs3,300!)

At the New heights of Innovation (1960 to 1987) you can see HH Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi’s, Mercedes Pullman. Also, look out for the Citroen D Special where the brakes was a button instead of a pedal – a car that was way ahead of its time.

The Large Vehicles and UAE Motoring showcases large four-wheel drive vehicles and you can also learn about early UAE taxis. Here you can find the 1957 Bedford, which was used in the UAE for military purposes – you can’t miss it, it’s pretty big.

Don’t worry if you don’t know what’s special or unqiue about the car you’re looking at, as each car will have a bit of information provided right next to the car. The information includes the year it was produced, the country that manufactured the car, a fun fact or two and even the car’s top speed.

Don’t miss the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman – the limousine belongs to HH Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and is one of 2,677 of its kind that was manufactured. The car is also bulletproof.

You can also find models of the first fuel stations on display at the museum as well as a small display of the first cycles invented.

There’s even a small puzzle corner plus an interactive area for children, and a rest/seating area.

While the main stars of the museum are obviously the cars, look around the museum to catch displays of old retro car advertisements and more.

Before you leave, stop by the information desk right at the entrance, where you can pick up a small souvenir of a classic car for your child (or yourself.)
