New large-scale art installation inspired by the popular hashtag unveiled at Dubai Design District…

Originally launched in 2014, the #mydubai hashtag has since gone on to catalogue tens of millions of moments on social media of all the myriad ways that Dubai’s residents and tourists experience the emirate.

It was an inspired initiative from HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and today we saw it commemorated with the unveiling of a new My Dubai City Sign art installation at uber-hip Dubai Design District (d3).

Reminiscent of the famous ‘I Amsterdam’ signs dotted around the popular Dutch city, the bright red large-scale installation is located between buildings 5 & 6 at d3, with the Burj Khalifa providing the perfect backdrop to what is undoubtedly the ultimate #mydubai selfie.

Apical Reform, the studio behind the piece, told Gulf News that when designing the installation they looked to combine both the traditional and modern aspects that Dubai blends so well. Each layer of the structure is composed by hand and and is meant to represent the ripples of a sand dune.

Aside from being the ultimate selfie spot, the new landmark will also serve as a place for buskers and street performers to gather.
