The original Don Alfonso on the Amalfi Coast is an Italian idyll with two Michelin stars – the Dubai outpost is a good imitation.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
A business-like dining room of slate grey sets a mood of formal fine dining. Somewhere to impress a client.

VIBE
The muted colours and muted chatter tell of a respectable establishment. Everything about the place says ‘classic’, like a double-breasted suit, or one of those special knives for opening letters.

WHAT TO ORDER
The zingy smoked yellow tail antipasti with orange, grapefruit mayonnaise and ginger. The bean-sized gnocchi arrive like an old friend, with a sauce of San Marzano tomato, smoked scamorza cheese and basil. The beef tenderloin with baked bread crust has a nice, sharp edge with its spicy tomato dip and salsa verde.

LOOK OUT FOR
The light citrus cream dessert, served in a hollowed out lemon and topped by a crispy lemon fritter. A brilliant coup de théâtre.

IDEAL FOR
Corporate big wigs looking to make an impression, close a deal, mark an occasion.

INSIDER INFO
Opera buffs will know the name Don Alfonso. He’s a key character in Mozart’s opera, Così fan tutte, first performed in 1790.

FINAL THOUGHTS
A smart restaurant with confident, creative dishes. Alfonso didn’t earn the ‘don’ for nothing.
