World Music Day

Superheroes close their first season this weekend with a friends and family affair. While the newcomer to the Dubai scene has welcomed some stellar guests – Plump DJs, Mike Skinner, Krywolf – local DJs come together to give the wonky bass party a good old send-off.

The antithesis to po-faced clubbing, Under The Moon, Kasparov, Mach 4, Woodle and Somalie are amongst the local band of brothers bringing the beats and bass to the Dek On Eight on Thursday.

“It’s been a phenomenal first season,” said promoter and party instigator Sean Rutherford. “The highlight without a doubt has been the response from the people of the UAE to our music and vision in general. People have been going bananas for it: each show has been full to capacity, with a really clued-up, buzzing crowd, with plenty of weird and wonderful antics.”

Naturally, the monthly shingdig will not take place over Ramadan but Sean revealed that Superheroes would be back in August for an indoor show before returning to its monthly Dek On Eight home on the last Thursday in September.

“I’m taking a month off over July to hit up Europe for some inspiration, check out some festivals and catch up on the scene there,” said Sean. “Then, on Thursday, August 28, Superheroes will be doing its first indoor party, at the very cool Story Rooftop Lounge. This venue is really nice and the management have great taste in music, so we feel it will fit nicely.

“We’ve built up so much momentum and people have been asking what our plans are over summer, so we didn’t want to take too big a break. Then we’ll be back at the Dek On Eight at the end of September for the whole new season.

“I have my eye on a few huge bookings and some very cool up-and-coming acts for the new season,” he teased, “but I can’t say too much about it at the moment as contracts are being signed as we speak. But you can expect bass heavy house, garage and perhaps a cheeky rave.”
