Volunteering in Dubai

The hugely popular Water For Workers campaign returns on October 18.

After the overwhelming turnout at the August edition of Water for Workers, organisers The Sameness Project has stepped it up a gear for their last drive of the year.

Three months ago, the initiative saw more than 5,000 bottles of water given away in less than an hour to Dubai’s labourers. Approximately 500 volunteers braved the 40°C heat to take part in the project, including children, families, and Dubai-based companies sending their staff to take part.

This time, PepsiCo have doubled the water to 10,000 bottles. The Sameness Project has even changed to a bigger location to accommodate the expected turnout. Volunteers are asked to meet at Collegiate American School, Umm Sequim 2 at 10am on Saturday October 18. All volunteers have to do is meet outside the school to have their cars loaded with boxes of water ready to be given out.

But that’s not all: car rental company Hertz has also joined the initiative to offer free cars and drivers to anyone that doesn’t own a vehicle but still wishes to take part. Just register here, ahead of the event.

Founded in 2012, Water for Workers – now sponsored by PepsiCo – encourages community recognition for the hard work Dubai’s labourers put into maintaining Dubai and its infrastructure. Despite promoting acts of goodwill, the organisation maintains that it is not a charity.

“Cold water is nice but it’s the thank you’s, handshakes, and small conversations with the workers, that help erase the lines that separate, and create the moment of sameness,” says Fiona Hepher, project manager at the Sameness Project.
