The multi-award winning musical theatre production of Mamma Mia is coming to Dubai in 2015.

The feature will perform 14 shows during more than a week of entertainment at Dubai World Trade Centre, running January 2 to 10.

Since it’s launch in London’s West End 15 years ago, ABBA-themed Mamma Mia has been seen worldwid by more than 54 million people and in 14 languages. It is currently the ninth longest-running musical on New York’s Broadway, while there have been a total of 39 different productions the world over.

Already hugely popular, a fresh wave of fans embraced the story when a big screen adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan hit cinemas in 2008. The movie, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, is the highest-grossing live action musical film of all time.

Using hits from Sweden’s greatest export – sorry Volvo. And Nokia – Mamma Mia enlisted the help of frontmen Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus at launch, a move which reaped reward with loyal ABBA fans.

Rather than charting the rise and fall of the band themselves, the show follows Sophie and her relationship with her mother during a tumultuous time that concerns the other half of her parenthood.

Songs featured include, ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’, ‘The Name of the Game’, ‘Voulez-Vous’ and ‘The Winner Takes it All.’

“We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of Mamma Mia to Dubai,” organisers said in a statement. “Like our 2013 Chicago production, Mamma Mia is in line with our strategy in the lead-up to 2020, to organise multiple award-winning Broadway and West End musical productions simultaneously throughout the emirate.”

The International Tour is produced by influential Judy Craymer, Richard East and Björn Ulvaeus. The run coincides with the 20th anniversary celebration of Dubai Shopping Festival, and tickets are available at platinumlist.ae.
