What’s On has details of a beginner design course at The Space, hosted by Romanian designer and visual artist Andra Clitan on August 30.

Ever dreamed about being the next Marc Jacobs or Valentino? Budding fashionistas can learn all about what it takes to become a designer with this beginner’s design course. To be hosted at The Space, the workshops are aimed at those looking to create their very own clothing or start a small fashion label.

Romanian designer and visual artist Andra Clitan will teach the foundation course. Having studied in both the UK and France, Clitan has her own line (Ma Ra Mi Clothing) and is eager to tailor lessons to personal requirements.

“The workshops I offer are designed around my students’ needs, aims, expectations and timing,” she said.

The one-month intensive course is aimed at beginners and will provide participants with an introduction to developing mood boards, learning about fabric, basics of fashion figure drawing and learning how to build a cohesive collection.

“I believe the UAE is an up-and-coming market with a lot of potential. My advice to new designers is to build and preserve their identity. There is nothing worse than copying someone else’s designs.”

Clitan also teaches courses on styling, fashion illustration, merchandising and sewing here in the capital.

The workshop will feature a mix of evening and weekend classes. For students interested in draping, they must bring their own mannequin or one can be provided for an extra Dhs150.
