Forget cash, today you'll be able to pay for a drink with cucumbers

Yes, you read that correctly…

Mark your calendars, people, May 17, 2017 has officially been dubbed DXB Cucumber Day.

What does that entail? Well, aside from being an excellent excuse to add a bit of extra greenery to your lunchtime salad, you will be able to walk in to over 35 bars and restaurants across Dubai, hand over a cucumber to a member of staff, and be presented with a juniper-based beverage.

Spearheaded by a British drinks brand, the one-day event is designed to help customers “recognise the true value of the cucumber by transforming the humble green fruit into exchangeable monetary units”.

Amongst the participating outlets, including Bridgewater Tavern, Copper Dog, Siddhartha, Rhodes W1, Geales, the Maine and Iris, there is a strict one cucumber-per-person-per-bar policy – although they’re not fussy about what species of the fruit you show up with.

We do not recommend painting a carrot green and trying to pull a fast one, lest you be mocked and turned away at the door.
