Time to stock up on a year’s supply of toothbrushes…

Bulk buying has become something of a phenomenon overseas, with stores like Costco in the US leading the charge on letting customers save money by purchasing large quantities of single items at a reduced rate. There’s also the convenience of knowing you’ve got dozens of spare soap bars or kitchen scourers packed away in the cupboard without needing to pop to the shop as often to re-up.

Newly-opened Surplus Stores in Nad Al Hamar is bringing this concept to Dubai, giving customers to opportunity to stock up on certain items at a fraction of retail prices.

There’s quite a big range too, including kitchenware, stationery, toys, electronics, building materials and more. All stock is packed up in cartons stacked high in the warehouse-like store, and sold in bulk with a minimum order of 1 carton per item. The number of items in a carton varies depending on what it is.

We spoke to an employee of Surplus Stores over the phone who told us that the company applies a sliding scale for discounts based on how much you purchase. That means the more you buy, the cheaper each individual item is – although discounts vary on an item-to-item basis.

As an example, you can buy a 10 pack of powerbanks for Dhs190, which would mean each individual piece would wind up costing you Dh19. The same powerbank on souq.com will run you Dhs60, which is a pretty significant saving. Of course, why one would need 10 powerbanks is anybody’s guess.

However, if you’re the type that likes to hoard away hundreds of toothbrushes for a rainy day, then you can check out the full range of products on offer by visiting the Surplus Stores website.
