The fountain and laser shows at the Burj Khalifa will be stopped for three days of mourning.

On Sunday, the death of Sheikha Hessa bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, the mother of Sheikh Khalifa, was announced, as was an official three-day mourning period.

Most live entertainment (including radio broadcasts) has been cancelled, with classical music to be played on the radio for the duration of the mourning period. Flags will also fly at half mast during this time.

The regular fountain and laser shows at the Burj Khalifa will also be cancelled. Normal service of the shows is expected to resume on Wednesday.

On the occasion of the mourning period for Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s founding father, in 2004, mourning was extended to 40 days, in line with the teachings of Islam. Previously, federal ministries and government departments were closed, though this is not the case this year.

Funeral prayers for Her Highness Sheikha Hessa bint Mohammed Al Nahyan have been held across the UAE, with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attending funeral prayers at al-Moatarid mosque in Al Ain.
