Where there’s a whisk, there’s a way…

Know your sponges from your souffles and your cupcakes from your traybakes? If you fancy yourself as a master baker, now’s your time to shine as a huge cake baking contest is coming to the UAE, with the chance to win up to Dhs15,000.

The UAE’s Best Homemade Cake Contest is back this month, with the first judging round taking place on Saturday, September 28, followed by a grand finale on Friday October 4 at the Indian Academy School in Al Qusais Industrial Area.

Contestants are invited to bake their wildest cake creations, from cheesecakes to sponges, from simple classics to extravagant works of art. Don’t forget, it’s not just about the aesthetics; 50 percent of the judging will be based on the flavour and texture of the cake, so keep in mind that what’s on the inside counts, too.

Having said that, they do say that first impressions are everything, meaning the outside design of the cake definitely needs to leave a mark on the judges, so dig out your piping bags and best cake decorations – no idea is out of the question.

The baker who impresses the judges the most will not only be crowned winner of the competition, but will also take home Dhs15,000 in cash. Second place will be awarded Dhs10,000 and third place, a commendable Dhs5,000.

Wondering if you’re suitable to enter? It’s pretty simple really – anyone over the age of 15 is welcome, as long as you don’t bake or cook professionally. You’ll need to enter before Thursday, September 26, and there’s fee of Dhs250 to participate.

If you didn’t make it through to the final, all is not lost. There’s still a chance to win with their ‘wild card’ concept – if people are giving your cake all the love on Facebook, you’ll automatically be given a pass to the final.
