FIRST IMPRESSIONS
“Welcome home,” came the greeting. The beaming smile suggests this isn’t just excellent customer service, the staff genuinely consider the restaurant their home away from home, and they want you to be as comfortable as they are. The backdrop of an authentic-feeling African hut adds to the authenticity, and it feels as far removed from the Mall of the Emirates location as you could wish to be.

VIBE
Fun is most certainly the name of the game. The thumping of the drum, the singing, clapping and chanting of an enthusiastic work force whenever a diner is celebrating their birthday is truly a joy to watch – though not be the focus of!

WHAT TO ORDER
This blows the myth that shopping mall eating is only about ‘fast food’ out of the water. We started with the brilliantly named ‘Hukunamatata Platter’, a veritable feast of prawns, meats and sides. ‘From The Grill’ – or more specifically ‘from the large fizzling open kitchen at the back’ – offers eight different kinds of steak, including the crafty ‘hanging tender’, while a 500g veal backstrap is a challenge worth taking on.

LOOK OUT FOR
The nationalities of staff, each eager to regale you with tales of their homeland. It’s not forced on you, but if you love to listen, it’s a lovely touch.

IDEAL FOR
It’s so much more than a post-shopping stop off, certainly worth stopping by for on its own.

INSIDER INFO
Tribes is part of the same company responsible for The Meat Co, which though in a traditionally classier location, is matched in many ways by this mall outlet.
