One of the world’s most celebrated clubs, Space Ibiza, is 25 this year. It’s marking the occasion with a world tour, which this month stops off in Dubai with a stellar line-up that includes Riva Starr, M.A.N.D.Y., Camilo Franco and German duo Tiefschwarz.

Playa d’en Bossa was known exclusively as a family resort when Space first opened its doors. Sant Antoni had Es Parad, Vila d’Eivissa had Pacha. The road between the two had Amnesia and Ku. Not only was this new club in an unfashionable area, but it stood in the centre of a car park. But owner Pepe Rosello had a plan.

Ibizan law required all clubs to close at least two hours a day. So Rosello opened Space for two sessions: one in the evening, and one late into the night, with a short break between. When two young English DJs, Alex P and Brandon Block, began DJing outdoors on the terrace, a clubbing institution was born. Space’s reputation as a unique club began to grow.

International DJs such as Sven Vath, Sasha, Dave Seaman, John Digweed, Carl Cox and Steve Lawler followed – all playing Space Ibiza’s famous (and indeed, infamous) marathon opening and closing parties.

Ali and Basti Schwarz first played the club over a decade ago. The brothers – better known as Tiefschwarz – say it felt like home. Ali recalls: “The first time we played Space was over ten years ago. It was a special feeling to play for such an iconic institution, which it was even then. We played both rooms – the terrace and inside – which have different energies but are both amazing.

Basti adds: “Space is tied to the history of Ibiza. We always loved the diversity of the club. It’s hard to compare Space to other clubs – it stands for itself.”

Tiefschwarz are playing Dubai and Portugal on the Space tour, with perhaps more shows to come. Ali says: “You can expect our typical Tiefschwarz hybrid sound, somewhere between house and techno. We love to take the crowd on a journey into sound with us. We try not to bore ourselves with our own music – that’s why we like to move from left to right, not to stick with one specific sound. But, in the end, it’s the energy between you and the crowd that tells you what to do next.”
