The Road and Transport Authority have reminded drivers of the strict fines they face for running red lights after the Dubai Tram suffered its first collision last night.

At around 8pm on Wednesday, a saloon hit the side of the new public transport system by Jumeirah Beach Residence, after it had ignored the signal to stop coming from one of the bridges across Dubai Marina.

Thankfully, no casualties were reported and normal service was resumed after just 15 minutes.

Most of the information about the incident was found through social media, with the Twitter user @RamiSaad publishing a photo of the aftermath. Shortly afterwards, the RTA confirmed the incident, tweeting: “Minor accident between Dubai Tram and a vehicle that crossed a red light in JBR. No injuries were sustained.”

The authorities than tweeted a series of reminders about the fines that would be issued for those who break the laws of the road. A series of images explained that:

– ‘Causing an accident leading to death’ will result in a fine of ‘up to Dh30,000 plus withdrawal of driving license for up to a year’.
– ‘Causing an accident leading to bodily injury’ will result in a fine of ‘up to Dh15,000 plus withdrawal of driving license for up to six months’.
– ‘Driving through red light without causing an accident’ will result in a fine of ‘up to Dh5,000 plus withdrawal of driving license for up to three months’.

The service was officially rolled out on November 12, servicing Knowledge Village, Dubai Media City, Dubai Marina and JBR. Each tram, which runs at least every six minutes between 6.30am and 1.30am, is made up of seven carriages. It crosses major junctions at numerous spots around the route, but has not negatively affected traffic in the area at all.
