The What’s On team didn’t spend much time on dry land to make the May issue. We left our work duds in the closet and slipped into our rash vests, board shorts, flippers, and goggles to tackle every watersport that’s available in the UAE.

Down went the computer mouse, and instead we picked up the surfboard, the paddle, or, in some cases, the rope attached to the back of a speedboat. If you want to cool down this month and get fit while sending your adrenal glands into overdrive, take a look through our guide and see which watersport is right for you.

Also in our new issue is a guide to the eight men who are coming to Dubai to do battle in the Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters. We spoke to the flamboyant Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright about his mohawk, his image, and why you’ll never see him take to the stage in a pair of beige slacks.

Like Peter, another man who could never be labeled ‘shrinking violet’ is Omid Djalili. We’ve profiled the comedian ahead of his gig in Dubai this month and hear why he’s changed his comedy path in recent times.

We had a stroll around BoxPark too, the hip new shopping district that everyone’s talking about. See which shops have set up at this outdoor mall, and what you can eat while you’re there.

Our culture section is bursting this month with the hit improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, George’s Marvellous Medicine and Legally Blonde on stage, classical music concerts, plus some visually arresting art and photography exhibitions.

For sports fans, we have news of a fantastic new venue in JLT called Sportsmania that has five-a-side football pitches, basketball, handball and tennis courts, plus sandpits for beach volleyball and beach soccer. If you want to see Dubai from up high, why not take a spin in the new gyrocopter ride – you’ll feel like James Bond (but without the chasing pack of villains).

Any foodies looking for the next hotspot should take note of La Cantine Du Faubourg, a stylish new French place in Jumeirah Emirates Towers that we predict is set to become a talked-about destination. We also have reviews of Catch, Busaba Eathai, and Bertin, which serves one of the best desserts we’ve eaten in months. Finally, we spent a couple of hours with the nice folks at Raw Coffee Company in Al Quoz getting the scoop on their new Jumeirah café, which is set to open in early May. Naturally, while chatting, we drank lots of really good, strong coffee which, we suspect, is how we found the energy to try so many watersports.
