If you’ve ever seen people leaving the studio after a 45-minute Flywheel class you’ll know that they shuffle like zombies, dripping with sweat, with a faraway look in their eye that suggests euphoria, together with a soupçon of shock.
The fitness centre that houses the intense indoor cycling workout has collaborated with a new healthy eating company to provide a menu of plant-based dishes for Flywheelers and also those who participate in the toning workout FlyBarre in the next door studio, or those who are just passing by.
Wild & The Moon sell smoothies and juices with names such as Feed The Wolf and The Tiger (both Dhs45), kale chips (Dhs20) and energy bars (Dhs20) at both Flywheel locations, in Burj Views and Gold And Diamond Park, to refuel blitzed muscles. They also plan to open a café in Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz in September.
“When you exercise you’re in that spirit where you want to eat well and be healthy, so our philosophy fits with that mindset,” explains Wild & The Moon boss, Emma Sawko. “You don’t want to eat McDonald’s after you work out, do you?”
Wild & The Moon’s food is organic and free of sugar, gluten, dairy and soy. Emma works with local farms to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and they try to recycle as much waste as possible – often with tasty results.
“When we cold press juices we take the pulp from the fruit and vegetables and mix it with the nut pulp you get when you make almond milk. We add spices and seeds to make crackers that are packed with goodness,” Emma says.
A team of nutritionists and chefs who specialise in healthy eating has produced the recipes, but whatever they make, the first priority is taste.
“Food must be healthy, of course, but crucially it must taste good,” says Emma. “That is so important to me. I’m a food lover so you cannot give me something that doesn’t taste good even if it’s healthy. Food should be good for you and good for the environment, but above all, it must be delicious.”
