The Al Maktoum International Airport expansion is steadily taking shape, with major construction milestones already underway across the site

If you’ve driven past Dubai World Central recently, you’ve probably wondered just how much is happening behind the scenes. Quite a lot, it turns out. The Al Maktoum International Airport expansion is moving ahead as planned, with Phase 1 still scheduled to begin operations in 2032 and billions of dirhams worth of construction already in progress.

One of Dubai’s biggest projects yet

The Al Maktoum International Airport expansion is set to become one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Dubai’s history. Once fully completed, the airport is expected to handle more than 260 million passengers annually, alongside 12 million tonnes of cargo, making it the largest aviation hub in the world. The development is a key part of Dubai’s long-term growth plans, supporting tourism, trade, logistics and aviation as the city continues to expand.

Construction is moving at pace

Work on the first phase is already well underway. Contracts worth Dhs13 billion are currently being delivered, while another Dhs55 billion in strategic contracts is expected to be awarded during the next phase. Over the last 15 months, teams have completed more than 10 million work hours on site. More than 17,000 concrete piles have been installed, over 45 million cubic metres of excavation have been carried out, and major infrastructure works continue across the development. The workforce currently stands at around 9,000 people and is expected to grow significantly as construction ramps up.

What passengers can expect

When complete, Al Maktoum International Airport will feature five independently operated runways, two passenger terminals and seven concourses connected to more than 430 aircraft stands. Travellers can also expect an Automated People Mover system alongside integrated air, rail and road connections designed to make getting around the airport easier. The project will eventually support Dubai’s gradual transition from Dubai International Airport to a larger aviation hub capable of handling future demand.

More upgrades are on the way

Alongside the airport expansion, Dubai is continuing to invest in existing aviation infrastructure. Improvements are underway at both Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central, including terminal upgrades, improved access routes and enhancements to baggage handling systems. With construction continuing at pace and Phase 1 still on track for 2032, Dubai’s next chapter in aviation is already taking shape.
