The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued the warning early on Wednesday, July 8, adding that the fog formation will lead to reduced horizontal visibility and at times zero visibility in some inland and coastal areas.
The NCM issued red and yellow alerts for fog across parts of the country, with the warnings in place until 9am on Wednesday.
Abu Dhabi Police urged motorists to drive cautiously due to reduced visibility and lowered the speed limit to 80kph on a number of roads. Drivers should follow the temporary speed limits displayed on electronic road signs.
As always, check the latest weather and traffic updates before you travel, and follow instructions from the authorities to stay safe.
Fog is fairly common in the UAE during the summer months. It forms when warm, moisture-rich air from the Arabian Gulf moves inland and cools overnight, creating the thick blanket of fog often seen in the early hours of the morning. Visibility is usually at its lowest just before sunrise, which is why drivers are often urged to take extra care during the morning commute.
