Simple ways to stay cool and save money this summer

With temperatures climbing across Dubai, it’s no surprise that air conditioners are running all day. But using your AC the right way could help reduce your electricity bill without making your home uncomfortable.

Here are a few easy tips to try this summer.

Keep your AC at 24°C

According to DEWA, 24°C is the best temperature if you want to stay cool while using less electricity.

Lowering your AC to 20°C or 21°C won’t cool your home faster, but it can increase your electricity bill.

Don’t turn your AC off when you leave home

It might seem like turning your AC off while you’re out will save money, but in Dubai’s summer heat, your home gets hot very quickly.

When you switch the AC back on, it has to work much harder to cool your home again. Instead, leave it running at a higher temperature, around 24°C to 26°C, while you’re away.

Going on holiday? Leave it on

If you’re travelling for a few days, don’t switch your AC off completely.

Set it to 26°C or 27°C to help stop humidity, mould and bad smells from building up inside your home. It will also be much easier to cool your home when you get back.

Before you leave, remember to:

  • Close your curtains and blinds
  • Keep your windows closed
  • Clean your AC filter

Raise the temperature by a couple of degrees

Even increasing your AC by 1°C or 2°C for a few hours can help reduce electricity use.

You can also use a ceiling fan or standing fan to help keep the room cool.

Keep the sun out

Close your curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day. This helps keep your home cooler, so your AC doesn’t have to work as hard.

Keeping doors closed also helps keep the cool air inside.

Use DEWA’s Away Mode

If you’re going away, turn on Away Mode in the DEWA app.

It lets you check your electricity and water use while you’re away and can alert you if there is an unusual increase, which could help you avoid a bigger bill.

A few small changes to how you use your AC can make a difference to your DEWA bill, especially during Dubai’s hottest months.
