Did you see it?

If you were within view of the Burj Al Arab last night, you might have noticed it was looking a touch more blinged-out than usual.

What was the occasion? Well, on Saturday, Morocco and Tunisia qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The teams join Saudi Arabia and Egypt as the Arab region’s representatives at the eagerly anticipated tournament.

Morocco last made it to the World Cup in 1998, while Tunisia’s last outing was in 2006.

As a special way of congratulating them, the Burj Al Arab lit up with each nation’s flag.

Fans of each team were excited and proud to see their countries represented.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, sent out his congratulations on Twitter.

“We are happy that four Arab teams qualified for the World Cup… Congratulations to all of them,” he wrote.

Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah, who also plays for Liverpool, tweeted that it was going to be an “Arab-flavoured World Cup”.

The 2018 World Cup will take place from June 14 to July 15 – and there’s sure to be plenty of opportunities to catch the games here in the UAE. Who will you be cheering on?
